Its been a weird couple of days full of lots of spiritual ponderings. It all started with the news of a local photographer here I’ve known for more than 20 years losing his 20 something daughter to a horrible accident. She turned up missing in late May and her body was found over the weekend. After being turned away from entering a local club, she had tried to sneak in via an exhaust vent and got stuck, eventually dying there. My heart just broke for this whole family. I can only hope that someone was faithful to share Christ with her and during those final hours of her suffering she remembered and reached out to Him. As I drove over a hill looking out over our city, I felt the Holy Spirits grief over so many perishing needlessly, not just in Austin, but throughout the world. I started wondering about how so many have and will reject the freedom offered to them through Jesus Christ. Could you imagine someone rejecting the sacrifice our soldiers have given for us to have the freedoms we have in America, only to move to North Korea, Iran, Russia, China, etc.
I feel like we born again believers in Jesus Christ and His sacrifice, are all stuck in a real life version of “The Invasion of The Body Snatchers”. For those of you unfamiliar with this great old classic’s plot, some small townspeople are being replaced by perfect physical duplicates, simulacrums grown from giant plant-like pods, but only after they fall asleep. The Pod People are indistinguishable from normal people, except for their utter lack of emotion (sound familiar?). The Pod People work together to secretly spread more pods. Eventually someone successfully escapes to the next town to warn them, but no one will believe him. Its the same with born-again believers in Jesus Christ, no matter how hard we try to warn everyone, so few will listen or believe. Even though we get “spiritually” tired, we must stay “spiritually” awake. We must reject what the world has to offer, especially those darned pods:).
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 NIV
