PHOTO EPISTLE #16 – Learning to Trust

Learning to trust God has been one of the hardest processes for me since giving my life to Jesus back in 1985. It seems like we all have been taught through many of life’s curve balls to not trust anyone or anything. At least that has been the case for me. I do have trust issues and learning to trust God has been a big battle for me through the years. Even when shooting this shot I struggled with trusting the mounting device for my camera, not to mention an open cockpit plane. Then when looking at the photo on the light table I realized I had nothing to worry about compared to the man jumping off the wing at 9500 feet in the air. Now that is trusting God. Yet so many people will trust that a hunk of metal will fly and then trust a wad of material to open just right and slow them just enough to keep them from crashing into the ground, but they refuse to trust in a God to love and protect them, not to mention pick up the tab for a one way trip to Heaven.

The trust I long to have in God and pray for often is described in the wonderful story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the 3rd chapter of Daniel. If you have not read this recently or ever, I really suggest you check it out. In short, these three God loving Jews refused to worship false gods and this king said if not, they would be thrown into this big furnace and burned alive. Not only did they refuse, they also told the king go ahead, their God would save them and if not they would trust that as well. The king got really ticked off, made the furnace 7 time hotter and had them thrown in. It was so hot the dudes that threw them in were themselves consumed by the fire. When the king looked in he was shocked and said “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” Gee, I wonder who the fourth person was?:) The king then called them to come out and was so impressed that not only were they not a pile of ashes, but they didn’t even smell like smoke. The king then swung to the other extreme and said from now on those who don’t worship the Jewish God would become chopped liver and their house too.

Ok, my trust is probably not there yet, but I have learned to trust God to provide me with food, clothing and a place to live. To date, He has never let me down. When things crash and burn it has always turned out be my lack of trust and obedience to God. That said, I’m still not jumping out of a perfectly good airplane!
